Purley CC V Kings CC

15-Jun-08

Another exciting finish ensued when Kings visited the excellent Purley ground. With a side short of some of its better players Kings faced a home side that fielded their overseas player and two first team players from the Surrey Championship. Despite looking on course for a relative easy victory at one stage a rush of late wickets meant nerves were jangling when victory was secured by 1 wicket.

Having won the toss and elected to field Kings made an excellent start as Joel Miah and Richard Sones produced excellent tight spells of bowling to restrict the home team. Some sharp work by Steve Smith led to the first wicket to fall; spotting Sugarman out of this crease Smith collected the ball from a Miah delivery and in one move threw down the stumps. Miah then struck again when he bowled Kap Bala two give him superb figures of 2 for 6 off six overs. Kings superiority continued as Pipe was introduced and he found the edge and Smith took a good low catch. Soon after Bala could do no more than pull a short ball from Samuel Tighe straight to Melligan at mid-wicket. In meantime overseas star Harding could do little other than watch as wickets fell around him.

At the halfway stage Purley were 50-4 and Kings were in control. However after the drinks break Harding and Winderley went on the offensive and looked to push on. Having finished his spell of 8 overs Pipe was replaced by Melligan, and Tighe senior took over from his son. Harding was fortunate to survive a run out appeal when, having been sent back by Winderley, he slipped halfway down the track, but threw himself headlong, minus his bat, and was deemed home by the umpire. An appeal to the 3rd umpire might have been interesting! The breakthrough Kings needed came when Winderley pulled a full toss from Melligan straight to Miah on the mid wicket boundary where the catch was taken comfortably. Quereshi and Paddock both fell quickly to Nick Tighe and Melligan. But then came the real turning point, as Harding, trying to keep as much of the strike as possible, attempted a second run taking on Miah. The pick up and throw from the cover boundary was superb, and Smith gathered smartly to run out Purley's last real hope of attaining a big score. The innings was finished off when Sugarman popped a catch up to Samuel Tighe making it a family dismissal as Nick Tighe claimed his second wicket.

The Kings reply got off to a flying start as Warne laid into two superb cover drives and the first over cost 11 runs. However Tighe was bowled playing down the wrong line (18-1), which brought Joel Miah to the crease in the fourth over. A reasonable partnership started to build between Warne and Miah but in the 9th over Warne edged behind (37-2) and a period of consolidation was needed. Miah was playing well and the 50 came up in the 15th over, but shortly after Melligan was dismissed by Sugarman as Purley bowled the openers out (51-3). Some fine hitting from Wright and some excellent shots from Miah help add 37 for the next wicket and Kings were virtually halfway to their target at the 20 over stage. Wright fell with the score at 83-4, and after a fine innings Miah was out for 42 with the score at 114-5. Almost immediately Mears, who had looked very comfortable, was out for a fluent 16 (115-6) and Kings were starting to loose ground.

However young Samuel Tighe despatched Harding to the midwicket boundary and Pipe was finding gaps down to third man as in no time a quick 20 was added. Tighe fell to the returning Winderley (135-7) with Kings needing 13 from 7 overs. Pipe continued to find the gaps and he and Smith reduced the arrears by another ten to bring victory within one strike. However Pipe, playing positively danced down to meet Sugarman and was bowled (145-8) and then Smith was bowled by Winderley (145-9). With Kings last pair at the crease the game could have swung either way, but a let bye and a push into the covers for two from Sones saw Kings claim a fully deserved victory against a side with a strong bowling attack.
