The
return fixture between these two sides finished in an emphatic
victory by 95 runs for the home side. Unfortunately there was
to be no repeat of the excitement of the result hanging on the
last ball as was in the first fixture. This time the result saw
Kings dominate throughout as they powered their way to a score
of 217. The mainstay of the runs came from a scintillating unbeaten
century from Kings opener Dave Miller, who carried his bat to
finish 121, the third highest individual score in Kings history,
and just 3 runs short of the all time highest score. After some
excellent bowling early on from Imber's Dayes and Mason Kings
openers of Miller and Perry, the latter restricted from his usual
flowing best by a side strain soon upped the scoring and had put
on 98 before the first wicket fell. Paul Bygrave (a Kings and
Imber player) lured Perry into a checked drive and Dayes took
the catch at mid off. Bygrave was Imbers best bowler and both
Miller and Warne were struggling to score freely as the bowler
took all the pace off the ball. However there were runs to be
had from the other end and with ten overs left Kings had climbed
to 130-1. Warne also fell to Bygrave soon after, but with wickets
in hand Miller and Miah were able to push on impressively in taking
87 off the last ten overs, Miller duly completed his 7th Kings
century, and Miah was his fluent best working the ball into gaps.
Both batsmen were also able to make good use of the wide-open
spaces left by the Imber skipper at cover. Miller needed six off
the last ball to pass Dave Perry's record score but could only
manage two, but nothing could take the gloss of what was a superb
master class on batting from the Kings opener.
Imber's
response saw a slow start, and Pipe conceded just 9 runs from
his five overs, but although Sones also started tightly Hall started
to open up to get the scoreboard moving. Pipe was replaced by
Young, who kept the pressure on, but Hall kept his attack going
against Gale, who had replaced Sones. Young got the first breakthrough
having Donnelly caught at slip by Miller, before Miah was introduced
to the attack. Hall finally succumbed, leg before to Young, and
then Miah effectively swung the game when he picked up four quick
wickets, having Elliott caught behind by Perry, David and Edgeworth
both caught in the covers by Tighe and then Bygrave excellently
caught by Miller at wide second slip. Jackson was unfortunate
to play on from a Nick Tighe delivery and Miah should have had
his fifth wicket when Pipe put down Mason at point. Gale returned
to pick up Holmes, who paddle a catch to back square where Tighe
took his 3rd catch of the innings and the match was won over when
Wright had Mason adjudged leg before off his second ball
