Kings
hosted Strollers, a side beaten only once all season, and that
by Kings landlords Kempton CC, in a match arranged at the last
moment. A highly entertaining match ensued in which it could arguably
be claimed was very much Simon Pipe's day!
Kings skipper for
the day Steve Smith won the toss and elected to bat first in a
40 over a side match. Kings made a solid start with Dave Perry
and Dave Blissett leading the way soon scoring freely. However
Blissett was then dismissed following a sharp catch at slip by
Aziz (59-1) and then Robinson struck in quick succession, first
bowling Evans (66-2) and then having Melligan judged leg before
first up (66-3). There then followed a period of consolidation
between Perry and Joel Miah as the visitors bowlers started to
rein in the scoring rate. Dave Perry fell just short of yet another
half century and Miah also went as Kings faltered to 118-5. Things
went from bad to worse as Samuel Tighe (118-6) and the Gordon
Young were dismissed (132-7). With just five overs of the innings
remaining and the score at 138-7 Kings were in danger of setting
a total well below par. However a superb partnership between Simon
Pipe and Nick Tighe rapidly turned things around, the two all
rounders went totally on the attack with some superb running and
well struck boundaries they took the bowling for close on 10 an
over for the last five overs - including an all run 5! By the
close of the innings they had ensured Kings had a reasonable score
to defend, 187, with Pipe finishing 44 not out and Tighe 37 not
out.
Strollers response
was sedate to say the least as Joel Miah and Richie Sones restricted
them to just 5 runs in the first 9 overs. Miah then struck dismissing
Baric for nought (5-1) and then Sones had Gosden caught by Perry
for 4 (9-2). At this point Kings seemed to relax and paid the
price. An excellent partnership ensued as the impressive Aziz
and skipper Krunic started to impose themselves. The family Tighe
took over the bowling, with Nick bowling without any luck, whilst
young Samuel was picked out for punishment. However the game was
about to turn with the introduction of Pipe (who had had a lengthy
recovery in the changing room, following his efforts with the
bat - and the effects of too much ale the night before!) Krunic
was Pipe's first victim (111-3), and French followed soon after
(115-4) to give Pipe two early wickets. Robinson came to the crease
and kept Aziz company in taking the score onto 150-4 with five
overs left. However any chances Strollers might have held on winning
were soon blown away as Pipe took centre stage - Robinson, Mahendra
and Arnold were all bowled as Pipey joined the hat trick club
becoming the fourth Kings bowler to take a hat trick (the 5th
hat trick in all) - and the first to all bowled (158-7). Strollers
may still have had hope whilst the excellent Aziz was still there,
however when he became Pipe's 6th wicket (to make it all 6 bowled)
the game was all but won. There was still time for Joel Miah to
take his second wicket (for figures of 2 for 3 off 7.1 overs)
and the Strollers were all out when Thomas was run out. 164 all
out and Kings won by 23 runs.
Simon Pipe returned excellent figures of 7-0-41-6, just failing
to beat his best figures of 6-40 against Sidmouth. His all bowled
hat trick meant it joined Nick Tighe (2), Owen Mears and Gordon
Young in having taken a hat trick for Kings. For Strollers Aziz
scored 87 of his side's total of 164, five other batsmen failed
to trouble the scorers.
