Following
the cancellation of the previous weeks home game against Preistfield
Wanderers due to persistant rain Kings made their first ever visit
to the Met Police ground to play Imber Court. On a warm humid
afternoon Imber won the toss and elected to make first use of
a good looking hard wicket. However it was Kings who dominated
the game throughout as the home teams batsmen struggled to cope
with the Kings attack.
There
could have been an early wicket for Richard Sones as Davenport
drove loosely to mid off but Mackenzie spilt the chance, however
the batsman did not learn his lesson and repeated the shot soon
after and the same combination of Sones and Mackenzie completed
the dismissal. Imber skipper Jackson led a little bit of a charmed
life as he first just cleared Miah at backward square with a lofted
pull, then edged between the slips before he skied a pull off
Miah straight up in the air and despite their best efforts neither
Miah or keeper Smith could make the ground quickly enough to take
the chance.
Meanwhile
Meacroft was also living dangerously, a lofted drive off Sones
was dropped by Mackenzie as he moved in off the extra cover boundary,
he was also put down when he drove Sones through mid on, this
time it was Melligan who could not hold on. However despite these
missed chances Kings were bowling well and the batsmen were struggling
to score on a pitch that was slower than expected. However the
introduction of Tighe started to really swing the game in Kings
favour. Having bowled Meacroft he then caught Blakely off his
own bowling before the batsmen had scored. However it was an outstanding
spell from Jamie Gale that really destroyed Imber. Off his first
ball Jackson tried to sweep and only top edged to Miah at backward
square, then Deans played the same shot and perished the same
way. Rogers was well caught at slip by Miller after Smith had
parried the ball to give Gale 3 wickets in as many overs. However
the leg spinner had not finished there, he bowled Dayes and then
had Cassidy adjudged LBW to complete his first five wicket haul
for Kings. When Smith smartly stumped Mooney Gale took his sixth
wicket and he finished his eight over spell with the outstanding
figures of 8-3-9-6. Despite a late flourish from Mason the Imber
innings came to an end when Melligan bowled Edgeworth - 96 all
out.
In
reply Kings had little difficulty, Dave Perry again looked in
good form in only his second game of the season, driving and pulling
well before he was caught at slip for 27 (35-1). Richard Evans
and an unusually out of sorts Dave Miller then took the score
to 66 before Miller was bowled behind his legs. Despite some good
bowling from the Imber bowlers they had far too few runs to defend
against a long Kings batting line up and Evans and Miah were able
to ease Kings toward the target without concern. There was still
time for Evans to fall lbw to Dayes (88-3) but by then Kings were
all but home and Miah finished the game with an emphatic off drive
boundary. However the day belonged to Gale - whose superb figure
of 6-9 were the fourth best in the Club's history.
